Three walks have been mapped out to make the most of all the natural beauty Sark has to offer. Each walk takes you to breath-taking vistas and places of interest. A reasonable level of fitness is required for each walk as even the shortest walk is relatively long. This has been deliberately designed in this way so that you can see and make the most of this beautiful island. Despite its small size, you would see very little of the island on a short walk. There are various points upon the walk you can “opt-out”. It is your holiday, so if you feel you have seen and done enough for one day, you can simply inform me, as your guide, who will direct you to the heart of the island (The Avenue) at the next opt-out point.
Further details on each walk, what you will see, the distance, terrain and anticipated time it will take to complete can be obtained by clicking on the relevant pages above. However, on each walk, the pace is steady and not rushed. You will have time to enjoy the walk, take photographs along the way and you will not have to worry about reading a map or trying to find signs or locations as you will be guided each step of the way.
It may be helpful to bring with you the free map of Sark (handed out by Sark Shipping when collecting your tickets or in the various tourist information offices) in the event you wish to opt-out part way through a walk.
The cost for each of the North, South and Mid Island Walks is £16 per person. If however you wish to arrange a completely bespoke guided walk for a private party, you would need to contact me so that we may discuss your requirements and thereafter I will be able to provide a price.
For the North and South Island walks, as your guide I will meet you at the bottom of Harbour Hill (where you disembark the ferry), through the tunnel in front of the Harbour Cafe. For the Mid Island walk I will meet you at the top of Harbour Hill where the Toast Rack (a tractor pulled trailer with seats) drops you off outside the Bel Air Inn. Each walk will end at the Bel Air where you can either catch the Toast Rack down Harbour Hill for £1.20 to catch the ferry or walk through the woods to the harbour (if you are not staying on the island overnight).
The North and South Island walks are long and so you need to catch the early ferry if you are a day tripper from Guernsey (the early bird return from Guernsey with Sark Shipping is cheaper than catching the later departing ferry in any event). We will meet at 9am.
The Mid Island walk is shorter so you will be able to catch the 10am boat from Guernsey and we will begin our walk at 11am. However, after the 17th September, you would need to catch the 8am ferry in Guernsey to begin the walk at 9am, this is due to a change in the ferry timetable. For the Mid Island Walk I will meet you at the top of Harbour Hill (you can catch the Toast Rack to the top of the hill for £1.20).
Upon booking your walk, I will send an email confirming all details including the time and location of our meeting point.
There’s a lot to see and so there is insufficient time to stop for a restaurant lunch, although we will stop at a beautiful viewpoint for half an hour. Therefore, you will either need to bring lunch with you or request a packed lunch when you book your walk online. This is an optional extra and will be prepared using fresh ingredients. There will be a freshly made sandwich or baguette and slice of homemade cake or a scone with jam together with a bottle of water. There will be a choice of vegetarian or non-vegetarian sandwiches/baguettes. The cost of a packed lunch is £8.
The paths we take vary from narrow tracks of gravel, stone, sand and grass to wider roadways. Care must be taken particularly upon the narrow coastal paths where you will on occassions need to walk in single file and pay close attention to where you place your feet. For short durations you may also expect to ascend or descend steps which can be quite steep.
Booking a walk is easy: simply go to the booking page which can be accessed via the tab at the top of the webpage or by clicking here. You can pay using PayPal if you feel more comfortable and the steps to book are easy to follow.
Payment is required in advance in order to discourage people from simply not showing up on the day. If however the ferry to Sark is cancelled for any reason, your money will be refunded to you in full.
Group sizes should be no more than 10 to 12 people in order to maintain a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
There are set days for the various walks individuals, couples and small groups can join but if you are a larger group or would simply like a more personalised walk, please contact me by telephone or email to discuss your requirements and arrange a mutually convenient date. A walk for a private booking can be tailored to your needs in terms of distance, time, gradient and can include lunch in a restaurant or a picnic at a picturesque viewpoint. The cost will depend upon your requirements.
Please note that any medical expenses in Guernsey and Sark are paid for privately and there is no financial assistance from either governments. There is no National Health Service and you cannot rely on your European Health Insurance Cards. Therefore, please ensure you take out a private travel insurance policy before you travel to these islands and ensure it covers you for such activities as walking and hiking.
As a guide, I will be out with a walking party during the day, please telephone between 5pm and 8pm any day of the week if you need to speak to me or discuss any aspect of the walks. Alternatively, email me at any time and I will reply as soon as possible.
